Microsoft loses Brazilian court case after telling hacked Xbox user to re-purchase games (tomshardware.com)

Community iconc/games@lemmy.world by
VetOfTheSeas@discuss.online

A Brazilian gamer who lost his Microsoft account and all his digital games has won a court order forcing the company to hand it all back, after support staff told him to simply repurchase his library. The user, who posts as Ordo_Liberal on Reddit, shared a screenshot of a small-claims ruling in the Xbox subreddit that gives Microsoft 15 days to restore access or face fines and roughly $400 (R$2,000) in damages. He said the account had two-factor authentication enabled when it was flagged and permanently suspended, and that none of Microsoft’s recovery options allowed him to regain access before he filed his lawsuit.

In Britain we have a load of royal named things, e.g “The King’s Head,” “The Prince Henry,” or animal themed pubs like “The Three Pikes,” The Red Lion (most common oub name) or something gorey like “The Hanged Man,” “The Village Chopping Block.” On that note, we also have pubs named after landmarks, e.g “The Old Oak,” “The Anvil.”

Every month 14 ships leave a quiet port on the west coast of Ireland, carrying alumina towards St Petersburg. Alumina is a fine white powder. Once smelted, it becomes aluminium, a metal essential to modern industry and also to military production, including aircraft, armoured vehicles, missiles and other weapons systems. I began investigating this supply chain after reading a report in The Irish Times earlier this year. I contacted the refinery with questions, but my calls and emails went unanswered.

Self-portrait with green background and blue irises by Paula Modersohn-Becker (c. 1905)

Community iconc/artporn@piefed.social by

Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876 – 1907) was a German Expressionist painter and draftswoman of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She is noted for the many self-portraits, including nudes. She is considered one of the most important representatives of early expressionism, producing more than 700 paintings and over 1000 drawings during her active painting life. She is recognized both as the first known woman painter to paint nude self-portraits, and the first woman to have a museum devoted exclusively to her art (the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum, founded 1927). Additionally, she is believed to be the first woman artist to depict herself pregnant.

Distro recommendations and the right questions to ask

A lot of distro recommendation threads focus on the questions that novices think are important, but leave out the questions people would have after experiencing the differences (things that distro-hoppers might ask). As such, answers vary between “use _____, I found it very user friendly” and “use whatever, you can turn any distro into any other, and tweak it to your needs.”

My guess is that people who work on small codebases with low-turnover teams (say, Redis or games like The Witness) would say “obviously you have to understand it completely, otherwise you can’t do good work”. I’d also guess that people who work on large codebases with high-turnover teams (say, the Google web search backend or GitHub) would say “obviously you can’t understand it completely, you just have to do the best you can in your local area”.

Does Android send details to chunks.memfault.com?

I have a pi-Hole serving my network. Since a long time I have seen a lot of requests to chunks.memfault.com from my phone. They where all blocked. I thought it was because of my old Samsung phone. But now I switched to another Android phone and the requests are still there. I installed NetGuard to see which app makes the requests, but none of them are. There is an entry for memfault.com but there is no app attached, only sni. So that makes me wonder if Android itself makes calls to this URL?

Hackers can remotely destroy hundreds of thousands of solar systems across Europe, researchers find (upday.com)

Security researchers from the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) have exposed critical vulnerabilities in Hoymiles solar inverters that allow attackers to remotely control, manipulate, or destroy hundreds of thousands of solar installations across Europe. The Chinese manufacturer holds roughly 20 percent of the European microinverter market, making the security flaw a widespread threat to balcony power plants and small rooftop solar systems.

Messier 24: Sagittarius Star Cloud

Community iconc/astronomy@mander.xyz by
Innerworld@lemmy.world

Unlike most entries in Charles Messier’s famous catalog of deep sky objects, M24 is not a bright galaxy, star cluster, or nebula. It’s a gap in nearby, obscuring interstellar dust clouds that allows a view of the distant stars in the Sagittarius spiral arm of our Milky Way galaxy. Direct your gaze through this gap with binoculars or a small telescope and you are looking through a window over 300 light-years wide at stars some 10,000 light-years or more from Earth. Sometimes called the Small Sagittarius Star Cloud, M24’s luminous stars stretch across this gorgeous interstellar scene. Spanning over four full moons on the sky toward the constellation Sagittarius, the telescopic field of view includes dark markings B92 and B93 near the center of M24, along with other clouds of dust and glowing nebulae toward the center of the Milky Way.
