Just got my 512 GB Machine today. Its hostname is steamdeck and the default Linux user is deck. I would have expected them to at least change the hostname in SteamOS. No wonder all the Deck ready games use a Steam Deck profile if not even Valve bothered to rename the thing.
Just a quick question that someone here may know: I have a Steam Machine coming and I’m looking to swap the SSD in my Steam Deck (2 TB) with the SSD in the Steam Machine (512 GB). As far as I know, the SM comes with a 2230 SSD so it’ll fit in the Steam Deck, but I’m curious if the install is different enough that I should backup and re-image the 2 TB drive before I put it in the Steam Machine or if I can just swap the two drives.

The title says it all, but I don’t want to have an empty body. There are no official statement for recent Steam Decks sold, that are Steam account activated and in active use. I’m not really interested into how many are sold (although I suspect that most in the wild are also in use for gaming).
I got a place on the 512GB with Controller list, and got an email a few days after they started. I ordered it on Friday the 3rd and got it today on Thursday the 9th. The tracking codes were all over the place and gave different estimates depending which branch of each company I used. Steam claimed it was shipped when the courier said they hadn’t got it so I was worried for a few days. But this morning Royal Mail (UK customer) sent me an email saying it would arrive today, while GLS said it would arrive tomorrow.
Proton 11.0-1 enables support for another batch of Windows games that up to now had only worked when using the recent Steam Experimental builds. The games newly working with Proton 11.0-1 include Universe Generator: The Golden Sword, DCS World Steam Edition, Resident Evil (1996), Resident Evil 2 (1998), Dino Crisis, Dino Crisis 2, From Dust, Blaite, Don’t Die Dateless, Dummy!, METAL GEAR SURVIVE, Warhammer: Vermintide 2, Metal Fatigue, and SHOGUN: Total War.
I received my Steam Controller a couple weeks ago. I just happened to check the Steam Controller page today and it let me place a second reservation. It looks like the hold on one reservation per account has been lifted.
I’ve been waiting for this update for months, this beta update includes an important update to Mesa that includes significant improvements to ray tracing performance. My understanding is that Unreal Engine 5 games especially should see improvements from this update.
Tucked into their FAQ about the Steam Machine release was a mention about making your own Steam Machine by installing steamOS to a computer you already have. AMD only for now.

Placed my order for the new one yesterday and I was curious. I bought the old one for 35 bucks at a discount. They must have had surplus stock in 2016 lol.
It’s currently possible to force games to use FSR4 through decky plugins/launch options. However it looks like Valve is planning to add official SteamOS support for using FSR4.

I linked to this article as a general explanation of the the Fedora immutable operating systems, but Bazzite is also another one that is actually specifically focused on gaming.
I understand that for at least the last few years dbrand has shipped the Killswitch case with a USB adapter to allow Valve’s Steam Deck Docking Station’s USB cable to fit the Killswitch. I also understand that dbrand did not always ship the Killswitch with the adapter. I’m not sure if the adapter has changed over time though, similar to how the Killswitch was updated.
So first off I know pretty much everything is gonna speculative as we don’t actually have the thing and those that do can’t speak on it (tho I doubt that applies to anyone here)
I recently bought a Steam Deck and I have a lapdock on the way, intending to use the Deck as a dual-purpose gaming handheld and laptop replacement. So on that front, I was wondering what more experienced users could tell me about using it.
@who@feddit.org pointed me to the solution. Since XInput is implemented using SDL2, it can be told to selectively ignore devices by setting the SDL_GAMECONTROLLER_IGNORE_DEVICES environment variable. The value should be a hexadecimal VID/PID pair separated by /, or a comma-separated list of VID/PID pairs for multiple devices.
Approaching the middle of 2026, I thought it might be interesting to check in with a handful of developers building software for the Steam Deck scene to see how things have gone, are going and might be for the future!
I noticed mine was sent to UK from Netherlands (while it should go to Germany)
I notified steam support, and aside from telling me they know of the issue, they let me choose a free game as compensation
So, I was part of the group that never got the chance to get a controller on the 4th, but clicked “reserve” right when the May 8th reservation system opened.
Just found out you can access the Home screen in Eden Emulator. I love it when I can experience the consoles BIOS as if I’m playing on the real thing!!
Like, I don’t want to hear about the Steam Machine’s price, registration date, or launch date 8 hours after the news comes out. I want to hear about it instantly! I want to be woken up. I want an Android App that subscribes to a webhook, runs in the background, and sounds an alarm when there’s news. You know, like an Amber Alert but for Steam hardware.
As the recent Easter egg has shown, the steam controller haptic motors can recreate some sounds. This project lets you play midi files using those haptic motors, and has a linked collection of ready to use midi files.
I’m sure most of you here have heard about Cemu’s woes over the last few days. The AppImage and Ubuntu zip assets of Cemu 2.6 on the official GitHub was “compromised by a pro-Russian threat actor”.
